Avenue Jean-Médecin: the big brands
Nice's main shopping street starts at Place Masséna and runs up towards the station. You will find the fashion brands, the Nicetoile shopping centre and Galeries Lafayette. The tram runs along its full length, making it easy to reach.
The Carré d'Or: luxury
Between Place Masséna and the Promenade des Anglais, around Rue Paradis and Rue Alphonse-Karr, are the designer boutiques and the big fashion houses. It is the elegant quarter of the centre, pleasant even for window-shopping.
Old Nice: crafts and local products
This is where to find genuine souvenirs of Nice.
- Olive oil and olive products: tapenade, soaps, wooden objects.
- Candied fruit, a speciality of the city.
- Soaps and perfumes from Provence and Grasse, the world capital of perfume, 45 minutes from Nice.
- Artists' studios and small designer shops in the lanes.
Favour makers who produce their own goods, and be wary of shops selling the same items as everywhere else.
Markets
- Cours Saleya: flowers, fruit, vegetables and local produce, every morning except Monday.
- Monday flea market, in the same place: antiques, crockery, old postcards.
- Libération market, north of the centre, used more by locals than by tourists.
